Here we go again: Kevin Smith predicts Lions to make playoffs

There are many ways in which we regularly practice irreality in these parts. One is that we pretend that who is Detroit’s mayor can actually fix the massive structural and economic problems of the city. The other is that we have hopes for the Lions. In what’s become an annual rite of denial, Lions running back Kevin Smith has declared, on his blog smith34.com, that the Lions will make the playoffs this year.

“I won’t make a prediction about how many games we’re going to win,” Smith wrote, “but I will say this: We will definitely make the playoffs this season.”

Well, isn’t that a prediction of at least nine or 10 wins? Smith apparently is too young to remember promises from Jon Kitna and Roy Williams in previous years. Doesn’t the Lions management review these blogs? Are they equally deluded?

Oh, to be young and optimistic again.
