For all of you wondering whether the Red Wings would have a fully-staffed, solid defensive core, don’t worry. Andreas Lilja has been re-signed for two years. After suffering through some of the team’s most embarrassing moments of the playoffs (How many times did he lose an edge and fall down in the finals?), Lilja has agreed to a two-year contract with the team. I’m a little surprised that he was re-signed, but it serves as proof the the Red Wings organization is committed to developing players who show talent and a commitment to the team. As a fan, I see moments where Lilja has looked great, but his gaffes are difficult to overlook.
Free Agency starts today and from the sounds of the reports in the papers, Brad Stuart and Dallas Drake may not be coming back. I’m surprised Drake hasn’t announced his retirement by now. And there are rumors that Stuart is trying to sign with a California team, to be close to his family.
Are the Wings going after Sundin? You would think they’d be throwing all of their resources at the guy. This possibility has had more coverage than it should, if you’re Ken Holland and you’re really pursuing Sundin. My guess is that Holland (and the rest of us!) would love to have Sundin for a short deal at the right price, but that he’s looking at other options that might help the team more in the long run.
