On Thursday evening, the Detroit Red Wings announced they had made a deal with former San Jose Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov, who’d been playing in Russia’s KHL this season. The deal was a one-year contract at the league minimum salary, a salary cap hit of $260,000 for the Wings this year.

This would have been a great pickup for the Wings, with goalies Jimmy Howard fighting off a bruised knee and Chris Osgood recovering from groin surgery. However, Nabokov was claimed off waivers by the New York Islanders today. It remains to be seen if the Wings will try to strike a deal with the Islanders to reclaim him.

The Detroit Red Wings, who are limping into the postseason, announced at a team meeting that Chris Osgood will be the team’s starting goalie in the playoffs.

The team has lost three straight games, and Osgood has had one of the worst seasons of his career. And it doesn’t help that the team’s commitment to strong defense has been less than stellar throughout the regular season.

I would expect Osgood to be on an exceptionally short leash, and that Babcock will not hesitate to turn to backup goalie Ty Conklin should Osgood appear shaky in the first round.
