The only way I can describe the Wings’ performance last night is to assume that they don’t want to see Anaheim as a first-round playoff opponent any more than I do. The Wings managed to drop a two-goal lead, lose a shootout and have a star player (Marian Hossa) leave the game with a groin injury.

I’m hoping that Babcock and the team recognize that this weekend’s home and home against Chicago is meaningless. It’s a great time to bench veterans and get some playing time for the kids.

The team has lost three straight games, and Osgood has had one of the worst seasons of his career. And it doesn’t help that the team’s commitment to strong defense has been less than stellar throughout the regular season.

I would expect Osgood to be on an exceptionally short leash, and that Babcock will not hesitate to turn to backup goalie Ty Conklin should Osgood appear shaky in the first round.

Well, count me among the surprised. Missed the first period of the game but tuning in at the start of the second, I thought the Wings looked positively good enough to beat, if not whip into a deluded stupor, the horribly overrated Predators. Babcock must be spitting nails at this point. I haven’t seen the team look this out of sync with a lead since the Marty-Lapointe-first-round-fiasco of 2001. At least Martin is taking bad penalties somewhere else. Did anyone else think Hasek looked shaken after he gave up the third Nashville goal? Is anyone else wondering if Ozzie might see some time in this series?

Talk about Nashville’s heart all you want, the Predators not a talented or deep team. Let’s chalk this one up to the fact that it is genuinely hard to sweep another team in today’s NHL and see what happens on Wednesday.
